Advice on an apple tree

I am new to fruit trees, and planted this Jonathan Apple tree last year. End of season it wasn’t doing well and lost all its leaves , this spring the trunk looks like this. Should I pull the tree or wait and see?

I would scrape the bark and see if anything is a greenish color. If not, its dead.

Wait a while longer to see if it leafs out. You'll have your answer by the end of Spring.
