Hi there 😊

We've just moved into a new house and the lawn was very overgrown when we moved in.

We've managed to get it sorted but now there are lots of bare patches with clumps of grass that don't present like normal grass!

Can anybody advise us as to what type of grass it is and the best way forward in managing it please?

Many thanks,
Cath

If you don't like the grass then its just weeds. If you keep the grass cut shorter it will grow thicker. Mow it often and it will change and look prettier. IF you let the grass go to seed it will lose some vigor but keeping it cut will keep the vigor in the roots.

It looks alright to me. It's not crabgrass, which is a real pain.

You need to aerate that soil, it seems very compacted, then scrape the bare patches with a rake and plant some new seed. If you can bear it, I would wait until cooler weather and reliable rainfall -- fall is the best time to reseed. But you can begin treating the soil now and with regular mowing, the grass you have should start to spread.

Once you've seeded make a large container (i.e., garbage can - size) mix of greensand, bone meal, and a rich soil (since you can't get peat moss any more), and regular garden or builder's soil, mix very well, and after each mowing sprinkle this around liberally. By the time you need to mow again your grass will have grown through this. Keep doing that until your lawn looks filled in and healthy, it will build up your top soil and provide a good base for a lawn that needs less care and water.
