What might this tree be by the look of the leaves. Thanks.

Sorry but a leaf alone is a problem. The quantity and branching character is more informative with the additional info you have given. Even more helpful is the addition of the imagery of the bark. And there is even more needed in truth. So it is not that easy, and I apologize for pointing it out, I do not mean to be obstructive in your quest to know.

All of what @DirtMechanic said plus something to let us know the size of the leaf. In the picture I don't know if the picture is a closeup or if the leaf is actually that size.

Looks like a birch leaf. The question is, which one. Possibly a river or swamp birch. As stated above, would need more photos of the actual tree trunk, and branches to verify.
