Should I cut my avocado from growing taller so it will grow wider?

I have an avocado sapling which is almost 3 years old, and he suddenly begun to grow upwards pretty fast (it happened after I cut another branch it grew from the stem).
I approximate its height at around 3 meters. The problem is that the sapling could never support its own weight, and it always needed an assistance with ropes that hold it.
Should I cut the avocado sapling so it will grow more to the sides and hopefully will be able to hold itself?

You can top it but it may still be top heavy. I use a good wooden stake and stake any top heavy plants.

I would cut at the branch closest to the height of the fence. That will help stabilize it and encourage it to bush out and stay smaller for easier picking when it fruits.
