Turning our lawn into a wildflower meadow

Like it says. we have a box of wildflower meadow seeds. Our lawn in not very big and we have put some small young trees (4-5 foot tall) in it.

What is the best way to sow these seeds onto the grass?
How do we stop birds coming and eating most of them before they root and grow?

Maybe, if necessary, you could point us to a more appropriate forum here or elsewhere.
