Hello everyone I have the same problem as seniorCitizen in trying to identify a couple of my backyard trees. They were well established when we arrived at this property and I guess they have been growing here at least 50+ years. I have had some helpful suggestions from Java and have looked up the site. It's definitely not native to New Zealand so I'm guessing it was introduced with the European settlers and could be from the Oak Tree family? Just a guess I don't know but here are some pics. It is definitely one tree not two.

Sue your tree is definitely not an oak.

You have a variegated tree that probably started life grafted ..it has reverted.
This gives you the plain green leaves.

More about reversion in link below...

https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?PID=273

The link below shows a variegated Acer that has reverted to give plain green leaves.

Or it may have grown from below the graft...the root being a different tree from the top.

The link below shows a red leaved Acer that has been grafted onto a green leaved Acer.
It shows both colours.... green from below the graft...red from above.

It may be a variegated Acer negundo.

But I would like to see a clear pic of a single leaf that has several leaflets on it.
The link below shows a single leaf.

Does it have any flowers/seeds or other clues?

I agree. It is Variegated Box-elder Maple (Acer negundo 'Variegata'), with some branches reverting to solid green leaves.
