I am interested in the rhubarb. It is a plant or vegetable that is alien to us Filipinos and the only time I encountered rhubarb is when my father-in-law had planted one in the garden and had harvested a few stems for cooking. I don't quite remember the taste but I guess it was a jam that he made the rhubarb into.

Is there anyone here who can post some more details about the rhubarb? Thanks to those who would react.

It's a vegetable really, but I think it's been reclasified as a fruit in America, as it's mainly eaten as a dessert.

Leaves are poisonous, but good for nettle stings.

Stems are usually stewed in a little water with some sugar :)

It's actually petioles (leaf stalks)
They are very acidic, but when sweetened to balance, have a delicious flavour.
Probably the nearest things I can think of to compare it to are tamarinds, sour cherries and sour plums, perhaps even cooking apples.
Rhubarb can be used in most of the ways you'd use cooking apples.

@zigs and @headfullofbees, thank you for the info on rhubarb. I had seen rhubarb only once in my life and that was a long time ago. Now I wonder how my father-in-law got to plant it in their front yard. And no one knew about it so when he started harvesting, we were all surprised. I remember that reddish (or purplish) stems that he would peel and say he would make into dessert.

No problem, easy to grow from seed if you order it off the internet. Planted a packet of 50 once and they all germinated :)

I wish I had some of that rhubarb in my hands! Sure have many uses for it including my daughter's digestive issues. I could try some rhubarb recipes too.

Not in the tropics.
It only grows well up to 75F, 24C, and needs a dormancy period below 40F (4C) .
