Now to the landrace subject. Literally if we don't do it the world will be extinct of citrus in the future, you can't get away with inbreeding forever as eventually nature finds something that kills any species if it's not evolving.
Doubtful logic there because not everything evolutionary is an advance. My Lisbon lemon tree is not in danger of extinction because it is thriving in its natural conditions.
The world does not rely on monoculture for its food. The GMO breeding program is unsuccessful. So many modern agriculture 'advances' have resulted in desertification.
