You can put some runners in pots until planting time. Normally about 20 plants gives a reasonable sized harvest IMO.
There is a 'lacto-bacillus' soil treatment that is made by boiling rice and using the rice water with milk. It basically costs nothing and greatly encourages soil life. Remember when preparing the new planting area that perennial and annual flowers should be part of the scheme for pollination purposes.
