I don't know about in Great Britain but in Texas our cats want to dig a tiny hole or cover up their messes and grass is not conducive for this. What we do to stop this is lay down pecan hulls or walnut hulls as mulch around our shrubs and trees. When the cats try to dig their little holes the sharp nut shells hurt their feet and they go elsewhere. A tomcat will spray to mark his territory and this is different from just taking a pee. Usually a tomcat will mark his territory when there is a female in proximity. Also a lot of folks plant a bunch of Thyme or Rosemary all around. Cats hate the smell. Dogs are another story altogether.

I find cat discussions interesting. Having rescued many, and had up to 10 living outside and a few did come inside over the last 20 years I never found "brown" spots from their pee in my lawn, and as I worked my beds pulling weeds or planting new plants I never came across a mound of poop from any of them. No clue where they pooped outside, maybe they went to the woods to do it. Or my cats were of a smarter group who talked among themselves as agreed not to pee on "mom" lawn or poop in her beds.

Working with what Chuck said.... Do you have other things such as trees/bushes in your yard?

I would heavily mulch with leaves under all trees/bushes or any other areas that doesn't have grass. My cats love digging thru the leaves to do their business in.

Edit: Are they your cats?

Post a photo of the damage because I don't see cats causing problems with their pee. I have had cats in my yard for over 20 years and have never had yellow spots.

This won't work in a lawn, but I use sticks about 10" long stuck in any loose soil to help deter cats. Hate the free-roaming ones. The absolute WRONG way to "have" a pet. Just like letting dogs roam free is the wrong way to have a pet dog. Domestic animals need to be under some kind of control, that's why they're domestic.

We have 9 cats they all dig a hole to pee. We have 1 small 15 lb. female dog that squats to pee. Male dogs lift 1 leg to pee on things like, bushes, trees, house, plants. Pee turns to ammonia which is very strong nitrogen. Cats only pee about 1 teaspoon of pee that is very small. I pee on corn plants if we have corn to pee on. If I pee on a dandelion plant too much ammonia kills it. Pee is organic weed killer. Cats will search for sift soil to find easy location to pee. If you create a soft spot some where in your yard cats will find it and start peeing there.

This is my experience also, never had cat pee killing grass. Sure someone isn't walking their dog across your yard? Female dog pee will do it.
