I don't think that you can, it's not just above it's under the soil as well.Thanks. Should I patch the split in some way?
Figs are not grafted and will come back from the roots. Give it a couple of months and I bet you will see new growth coming from the base. It will grow really really fast. If no new growth appears from above the split that part of the tree is dead and you may as well get out the chainsaw. I have seen this before for 2 different reasons. One was a lightening strike and the other was a super hard freeze.
