Whether she mis-quoted or not, mum and I both knew what she meant.

I believe that is a mis-quote, and the original is 'Hell is paved with good intentions'. People used to ask 'Is it the road to Hell, or the way to hell, and the answer was 'Neither'.

I use to have an aunt who would always say "they are going to hell in a handbasket". Basically all she ever did was judge people and gossip about them behind their back, in her mind everyone and everything was evil. But I am curious if the handbasket had wings or wheels? I never did get a change to ask her.
