Planting fruits from outside your climate

Has anyone had much success planting fruits from outside their climate?

I live in Australia in quite a hot area and want to plant some fruits from colder climates, I'm sure they'll grow but how much luck will I have?

Many fruits require a dormancy period of low temperatures before they can bloom. Research the plant before spending the money.
