Does anyone get their digital photos developed? I have a digital camera and I feel like now pictures are just "on the camera."
I do occasionally download them and send them by email but when I actually had them developed we'd share them more readily.

Would never dream of it these days, but I have spent a lot of time doing the opposite i.e. scanning in old family photo's . For me I suspect developed (printed) copies would have quality issues.

Yes. I often wonder how many photos of family and so on taken on phones end up being lost. We've still gor envelopes and books of snaps going back 50 and more years. Now there is very little apart from passports or official photos.

I don't believe we have ever lost any, but kids have storing in the cloud when it first started (not recently as far as I know). Ours go on to the SD card and are often downloaded to disk and then moved to the current year folder on the SD. The SD card is normally replaced yearly and the previous year stored away. I really should get one of the kids to keep these, but I know they would go missing.

Right now I have pictures from 4 trips on my phone.

My brother rescued pictures of Mom's when she passed 24 years ago I told him I would make copies and get them back to him. Still have to.

And I guess I still owe him on my other brothers funeral. He knew he was dying but said for us to figure out what to do with him. Fine we'll Cremate you, nope don't like that.

So we decided on cheap as we could no funeral and plain pine box.

This brother we barely knew because most his life was in prison.

Get a call from other brother. Be at the Cemetery at such and such time. Get there they are having grave side services and regular coffin.

Then brother wanted us to go to a Restaurant. He gave us a bill for our share. Well tuff.

I've struggled with organizing my garden pictures. What worked for me was uploading everything to my computer and choosing the best shots to load onto a digital picture frame. It's been fun seeing the garden change through the seasons, and it loops through the photos so I don’t need to scroll through folders all the time. Makes it feel a bit more personal too.

I have two cameras and never take pictures with a phone. I download pics from camera to computer storing them in folders. I would never store any of my pictures on a cloud or any web sites. There is a big risk of them being accidentally lost or used by others elsewhere on the internet. Once gone they can't be retrieved. My pics are private and will stay that way, particularly shots of family and friends.

It's pretty much impossible to have them lost from a cloud unless you forget your password and the info you give to reset the password. Pretty much everything is stored on a cloud these days, way more safe than if your phone or laptop.. hacked or just breaks.

If someone wanted to print pictures it would be cheaper to buy a decent throw away printer. I can't see anyone paying for prints unless they are a professional photography artist.

These days photography and video on phones are just as good as any moderate camera.. I can take pictures of creators in the moon with mine.. something that was impossible 10 years ago with a phone. And with the aid of AI you can do the unimaginable with pictures and video regardless what it was shot on.

Over a billion people right now using cloud to store their stuff..

I don’t know of any cloud catastrophe yet, but it could happen . Yes they have redundancy and backup, but how often is it tested and even if it is to what extent? In my remaining lifetime I don’t think I would bank on it protecting something so personal.

It could happen, anything could happen, but highly unlikely.

Big providers like iCloud, OneDrive, Google photos, Dropbox etc keep multiple backups across different locations so even if a server dies your photos are safe elsewhere.

But still, nothing is impossible so it's a good idea to also keep them backed up on a USB Flash drive.

It is way safer than keeping actual photographs, you house is way more likely to flood or burn down etc than a cloud crashing all it's servers.

I agree with DiggersJo, nothing regarding technology is safe from failure or hacking. When I first joined this forum I had two pictures 'stolen' that I'd posted here. By accident I came across them in two different sets of internet images. They were only pictures of plants but that was enough to keep my images stored on my personal computer, and have an external back up that I use regularly.

I'm not interested in AI. All my pictures are in their natural state. I can't see the point in altering them and creating a fake image of the original shot. In fact many that I see on the internet are so over enhanced they're not worth a second look.

As I said, nothing is impossible. But it's ironic that your entire life revolves around technology and you don't seem to realize it. Your health records, dental records, banking info, vehicle registration, driver's licence, insurance.. your entire identity is kept safe via technology and backed up by clouds yet you are worried about someone hacking a cloud storage to get your pics, even though there are an infinite amount of pics online available to anyone with internet access? I know that banking etc is encrypted and far more secure but I still don't think getting your pics is on any hackers to-do list.

It's a good idea to never post personal pics but I don't understand why you would care if someone uses some pics of plants that you took? If anything I would think it would be nice to think that out of the billions of plant pictures online available to the public, a couple people preferred your pics to use. I know it's not my business, it's just how I would see it.

To each there own but personally I find amateur photography to be dull and boring.. that's why professional photographers make money off their photos and amateurs get a couple of thumbs up for their pics if they are lucky. We live in the age of technology now where a boring pic can become vivid and bursting with color, modified in ways that was impossible to do 10 years ago. Most people embrace that. Doesn't mean you have to but I wouldn't worry about anyone wanting to hack a cloud storage to steal your pics when anyone can create anything they can possibly imagine via AI.

But aside from all that, as far as the OP I don't see any reason to pay for prints when you can get the same results by buying a cheap printer at Walmart with photo paper and make your own for a fraction of the price.. unless they are a professional photographer planing on selling them in an art gallery. But that's just my opinion.

I really enjoy spending time walking and taking photos of beautiful places. But only for myself, I never display them anywhere outside of my camera or phone. I recently started using Vortex, which pleasantly surprised me.

I totally get what you mean. It’s so easy to just let photos sit on your camera or phone and never actually do anything with them. I used to get prints all the time, and there’s definitely something more personal about flipping through a physical photo album.

Lately, I’ve been using groovebook to get some of my digital photos printed. It’s a monthly photo book subscription, and it’s actually made me look forward to picking my favorite shots each month. The quality is decent for the price, and it’s super easy to upload photos straight from your phone. Plus, having a small book to share or give as a gift is really nice, feels a bit more meaningful than just emailing pics.
