Ordered 40 Emerald Green Arborvitae today

I ordered 40x 12" Emerald Green Arborvitae on ebay today. $120 for 20 of them, and I ordered 2 batches.

I am going to plant them every 3.5 feet so I can have a nice privacy fence down the side of my backyard between the yard and the street.

Plus I want a few for the other side of my cars, and in front of the house.

My parents owned a landscaping company and despised arborvitae. I think they considered them "trashy", plus they need sprayed to prevent bag worm.

But, its a cheap way to create a narrow barrier between us and the street that is green all year.

How long does it take to create a thick green fence if you plant sparse? 3.5 seems so sparse to me. Might be mistaking though

Are they Green Giant? If so, 3 1/2’ seems waaaaayyy close together.

3 to 4 foot is the standard. It'll take 4 or 5 years to fill in.

I'll build a jig with some scrap wood and use some marking spray paint. 2 feet out from the fence, 3.5 feet from the last mark.

Good for you friend. Sounds like a great idea and will look nice in time. Make sure you have enough water hose to reach everything. You could go ahead and work the soil before planting to make sure you have good drainage. One of the common problems with planting these plants are being planted too deep in the ground.

Emerald Green arborvitae planted too deep in the ground can be detrmintal, potentially leading to root rot and death. Plant the root ball at ground level, ensuring the top of the root ball is level with or slightly above the surrounding soil. Do not bury too deep!

If you plant in slightly raised mounds you and brush the soil off level after they start growing well and expose the root flair during the Summer. Good luck friend and keep us posted.
