Looks interesting but I can't see any advantage over raised beds or just a standard allotment system.

It appears as though he shall be needing to bring in the sawdust and sand and then buy the Mittleider nutrients.

We use our own garden soil, home made compost and free horse manure to keep everything nutrient rich and grow very healthy and prolific food crops. A large part of our growing area is covered in weed suppressant plastic through which we grow some of the crops. The plastic does exactly what it says and we don't have to do any weeding - just roll it back each winter to dig in more compost etc. The plastic is porous so allows the rain to soak through and, in the hot weather, helps prevent evaporation. IMO you have evaluated correctly. It appears the Mittleider System is a lot of extra work and expense, where similar results could be achieved going more mainstream.

Quality soil, sufficient moisture, weed suppression, insect control, and pray to the Sun for decent weather and learn how to preserve for off season use and it is possible to grow a lot of quality food.
