Loose Cabbage Heads

This year, I grew some nice sized cabbages but the heads weren't tight at all.
Anyone know what causes this?

The most common cause is improper watering. They like to stay consistently moist. The second most common reason is temperatures are too high. Cabbage like temps no higher than about 75F

Loose cabbage cooks up nice enough.

Picking too early is a factor as well. I give mine a squeeze before harvest. If they give, let them go. If they're rocks get em.

Cabbage can tolerate frosts pretty well, even if you're late you'll only lose some outer leaves.
