We've recently dug out a lot of old shrubs (planted before we moved in) from this area and the weeds was also horrendous. We're looking for some inspiration in how to make this area look nice but be really low maintenance!

Does anyone have any ideas of how best we landscape this area, relatively cost effectively? We were initially thinking to place sleepers along the bottom of slope, put membrane down across slope to prevent weeds and use gravel grids (ideally something more cost effective) to hold decorative stones (the area is at an approx 30 degree slope) and placing low maintenance planted shrubs throughout. The sloped area is 40m2 so no idea where to start!

Looking for some help please with the following;
  • Does anyone have more affordable solutions for holding decorative stones in place? Looked at gravel grids so far but working out really expensive for the area and it is more for driveways where it is load-bearing, so looking for something more cost effective.
  • Any particular plants/ shrubs you would recommend for a more decorative look that will look right across the 40m2?
  • Any general advice on landscaping this area, open to ideas!

What is your sun exposer on this area? Have you considered planting ground cover that would assist in choking out weeds (i.e. micro-clover) ?

I had a similar situation in my yard where we had to clear out old shrubs and battle a ton of weeds. For the slope, I used sleepers and put down a heavy-duty membrane like you’re thinking. Instead of gravel grids, I used large, flat stones to hold everything in place. They were cheaper and worked really well for the slope.

For low-maintenance plants, I’d recommend ornamental grasses like blue fescue or lavender. They’re tough, look great, and don’t require much upkeep.

Also, make sure to think about negative slope drainage. I had some issues with water pooling at the bottom of the slope, but using proper drainage techniques helped prevent any erosion or standing water.
