No. But to have big garlic, they need to be planted in somewhere sunny and hot.

Most garlic bulbs will perform better if they are planted in autumn, preferably in October or November, so they have time to put down roots before winter.

They will also benefit from a blast of cold winter weather, which splits the garlic clove and encourages it to grow into a new clump of bulbs when the weather warms up.
