Organic gardening requires one to have a catalogue of natural formulations that one can make at home to replace commercial formulations. A good insecticide can be made by combining bitter weeds with pepper and then boil to extract the active constituents. Then dissolve bar soap to act as an adherent on application. Filter, let cool and apply.

I have used chili powder to chase away ants in my garden. Only add it to the soil around the plants; never on the plant leaves. If it happens to land on the leaves, you will find small brown spots where the chili powder has burned the leaf. The powder around the plant does not alter the taste of the vegetables.
