Welcome Billyboi. Take a look at the older threads here in Landscaping and Gardening Design and they may give you ideas on what you would like in your garden. First you need to decide whether you want lawn, trees, shrubs, flowers or a combination of those and perhaps an area for growing vegetables too. :)

What a clean slate you have there to work with, nothing at all to move out. And it is not to big either. I would like to think of that area as developing a room. Figure a seating arrangement, and plantings around that. Lots of textural visuals, and plants that butter flies and hummers would love. A few easy conifers for birds to hide in in the winter. Plants that look well without the bloom as well as with, and some fragrance to waft to where your sitting with your glass of wine. In this small area, I would also only focus on trees for small areas, if your going to put a tree in. Some shrubs can grow taller, and be formed to look like a tree, depends on the selection. Happy hunting. check around this site for other thoughts. And gather books for winter study. Lay out your design on paper etc. Be patient.

really, no hummingbirds. so sad for you. All of you in Britain need to plan to go to Arizona in early September to see the migration of 28 special, that will be in Southern Arizona, near Ramsey Canyon. It is thrilling.

Our country isn't warm enough for these birds but there are people that keep them here in heated aviaries or indoors, either to breed or use for shows/competitions.

This is a bit confusing...the op has started two idendical threads now with different sets of responses and hasn't come back to either of them in over two days. Perhaps admin ought to merge the two?

Given the number of replies I can't really merge them, but I have closed the other topic and left a link there to this one :)
