We pick what puts the best & most food on the kitchen table. Corn, beans, potatoes, tomatoes are #1. Onions & garlic are so easy to grow in beds, 3ft x 3ft square for 81 garlic. 3ft x 20 ft for 200 onions. How much can you grow in the smallest space. Corn 5" seed spacing, 32" row spacing. Bean seed spacing 2" apart. Tomato plants 18" apart. Potatoes eyes 6" apart. Squash & greens are mostly water with not much food value so we don't grow them. Strawberries 12" apart runners are next years crop. Carman peppers are very prolific they load up with 40 big 7" long sweet peppers they grow good in 100°F temperatures all summer 4 plants produce 160 peppers. Red Pontiac potatoes out produce White potatoes 4 to 1 plus Red potatoes do good in hot 100°F weather but red potatoes have 1/2 the carb of white potatoes. I have trouble growing carrots our spring weather is very short 32° to 95°F in 6 weeks. We can't grow peas either. We might be able to grow peas & carrots in a hot bed or small green house.
