Today how about some peanuts?

Peanuts are very well suited to our climate/soils. They thrive in sandy loam soils. They need about 120 days to mature. Best of all for me, they are a terrific soil conditioner adding/fixing Nitrogen to the soil. I often use peanuts as a rotation garden crop and follow it up with a Nitrogen loving veggie. Works for me.

Our little plum tree is loaded some years, when the missus has made enough plum jam she moves on to chutney, beats the tomato any day.
When we came there was a fig and a grape vine in the greenhouse. The grapes were tiny and sparse, so I dug it out. It must have been in competition with the fig, because the fig has taken off since, more figs than we can eat.
I have taken to growing strawberries in buckets, the badger tore up the whole row last year, now I can separate them, and put them out of reach, or when they are ripe outside the back door in easy reach. It is my first year of it with mature strawberries, but fingers crossed it should work fine.

Sweet Potatoes are a great Southern USA choice. They are very low maintenance, thrive in sandy loam soils, but do require a long growing season. I prefer the Asian and Murasaki varieties for taste.

A good reference thread:
