I planted quite a bit of this a couple of weeks ago and checked on it today. Some of the tubs/pots showed healthy growth while others showed none. Given that they are the same cloves planted at the same time I'm a bit surprised at this. I'm a bit new to gardening and wondered if this was normal:

I don't find it too surprising, give it a while. Those earthenware pots dry out easily, beware of that. Not sure what size they are, but I would plant one in an eight inch pot two in a twelve inch, and I would fill the pots right up, the soil will shrink considerably over time.
Basic rule, if in doubt choose the bigger pot, I can't think of anything off hand that will suffer from too much room, I suppose some things might flower more profusely if restricted; most will suffer given too little room.

Thanks Oliver, I've just been out to water the pots!

I wasn't sure of the spacing - most of the sites that I was on suggested six inches apart. i then saw a site where someone had a good harvest where the garlic was just a couple of inches apart.

I'll top the pots up when it gets a bit warmer today.

Garlic develops a tremendous root system. I'd venture that even an 8 inch pot would cramp a single head.

If those are hardneck garlic I sure hope they had a cold (vernalization) period, otherwise all you will get is one large clove and not a bulb with many cloves. Personally I would never grow them in pots, I fit 98 in a 4x8 raised bed. Lot's of rock here.

It gets quite cold here - 750 feet up in The Pennines. I bought the garlic from The Garlic Farm and had to buy more than i needed, hence the last few going into pots. I've watched a lot of videos about growing garlic and some seem to get away with pots:

I like the bit where she says stick the cloves in a freezer for a couple of weeks :)

That video is about planting garlic in the spring. I plant mine in November, they have plenty of time to develop a root system so that come spring green growth starts early and provides a long growing season compared to spring planting.

Just looked and more is coming up.

I use Store Bought Garlic on plants I'm wanting to deter Bugs. I also use Basil and Marigolds. If I still have problem I will use a Spray with at least Castel Soap, Neem and and maybe Peppermint Oil.

Mine I'm going to mulch it with Straw and in the Spring pull it aside use it for a Mulch.

It should be ready about June.

I would suggest removing your mulch early season just as the shoots breach the soil, this will help the soil warm up faster. Then once the plants are a foot tall replace the mulch to help keep the soil warm and moist instead of dry and hot.
