I have a hanging basket that I'd like to put something in that flowers but doesn't die off at the end of summer. I don't know if there are any shallow rooted perennials but I thought I'd ask. It's about 8-10in deep and like 12-14in wide. Whatever I plant obviously doesn't need to flower all year but I'd like it stay green when it's not blooming, so not bulbs. I have geraniums in a larger hanging pot so I know those work but I don't think this pot is big enough for a geranium. If there isn't anything can anyone recommend an annual that lasts into late summer at least? We don't really get nights under 50 degrees until December around here.

My first thought would be ivy - one with variegated leaves would look lovely year round. It doesn't flower though, so if you wanted flowers then maybe something like trailing rosemary? Plus it smells divine :)

Maybe a small fuchsia? They are perennial in zone 10, but on a sheltered porch, or if you brought it in (or protected it) on the really cold nights, it might work.

How about an hybrid Geranium? There's this recently introduced variety that looks like a regular cut Geranium, yet it grows like an Ivy Geranium

Heuchera will take whatever thrown at it. Can stand very hot/cold weather and has beautiful flower whilst the colourful leaves stay close to the surface of the hanging basket. Also vinca atropurpurea. Some strawberries, lobelias are beautiful.
