... I'm about a month away from planting.
Seems like you have plenty of time {the best time to plant corn in Ohio is from late April to early May).

It's dealers' choice, but I have always believed direct seeding is the best way to go...and seed starting indoors should only be done when the growing season must be extended. Why go to all the trouble when it isn't necessary?

Like I said it's dealers' choice.

The extra time allows stagger planting and gives a head start on beans.. if it works, then great, if not, we learn something anyway.

Pickles, peppers and tomatoes need to be started indoors here so what's another tray of seedlings?

Now, if the ground would dry up enough to work, I can start my direct seeding stuff, carrots, spinach and peas.

I have 72 starts in a plastic grow cup kit. When they are ready , I will nurse each plant out of the cup and plant in tilled soil. I did that last year with success. Last year was 'sweet corn' .this year I am planting 'Jimmy Red Corn'.
I don't like the fiberous cups because my impression is the corn will have a hard time getting a good root system started outside of the cups.

I've seen roots of other crops punch through these cups before so I don't think they'll cause a problem. I'm more concerned about damaging the roots while trying to get them out of a plastic cup.

This is an experiment anyways.
