Chamber Bitter (Phyllanthus urinaria), also known as Gripeweed or Shatterstone, is originally native to southern & eastern Asia, Sri Lanka, Australia, Japan, Taiwan, Phillippines, Indonesia, new Guinea and other western Pacific islands, but has now become a cosmopolitan weed. It is one of approximately 850-900 species of Leaf-flower (Phyllanthus) found in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. The genus is known for its distinctive branching in which leaves and flowers form only along horizontal branches that radiate from a vertical main stem. Phyllanthus is the type genus of the large and diverse Leaf-flower Family (Phyllanthaceae), which was formerly included within the even larger and more diverse Spurge Family (Euphorbiaceae).
