Why are onion leaves curling up

Why are my onion leaves curling up. A lot of the leaves are staying horizo

ntal instead of standing upright. Some leaves are peeling off from the stem.

The leaves peeling off quite often happens. As for curling, any herbicide been used nearby? Any sign of thrips on the leaves , grey line damage.

Thanks DiggersJo. No herbicide has been used nearby. No obvious sign of thrips at this stage but it is probably best to spray for thrips now; nothing to loose.
