Hummm...does it have any color to it? or is it just black? or is it my eyes? It would help knowing the coloration and pattern if any.
It's either a Cicada or Spinx Moth pupa. Probably a Spinx Moth. They look very similar.

I hardly ever see them either but I hear them all the time. And I only see them as they are being drug away by a cicada killer wasp.Thanks Chuck. I think it's phinx-moth, since I never see cicadas in my backyard.
