Katydids (Tettigonidae), also known as Long-horned Grasshoppers, are insects in the same order as crickets & grasshoppers (Orthoptera). There are around 6,400 known species with cosmopolitan distribution throughout temperate and tropical regions. There are 278 species listed for North America north of Mexico. Katydids are largely herbivorous, but usually do not usually appear in numbers great enough to be considered major garden pests.
