Totally incorrect. It has been in the mid-twentys here for several days and cabbage, carrots, broccoli, Daikon radish, and turnips are all doing just fine...without any row covers. Nutrient dense soil makes a huge difference.

Current turnips and daikon radish.

Depends how established they are. If they're still fairly small, 2-3 days of full-freeze always kills mine.

its barley reaching 32 here during day nights are 10-20 degrees greenhouse helps as it holds heat from day sunlight but temps at night still go down same as outside temps broccoli is doing great so is parsely and lettuce

if soil is heathly plants are as well they can take some colder temps

20° F killed our Cauliflower.

15° F killed, Broccoli, Bibb lettuce.

13° F Dutch cabbage leave are dead but frozen heads are good. After thawing out cabbage heads made good crunchy coleslaw.

8°F cilantro looks very wilted not sure yet if it is dead.

8°F carrot tops are wilted an carrots are frozen in the soil. It has been below freezing for a week soil is hard as cement I can not dig up carrots. Todays high 20°F.

8°F Napa cabbage leaves look good and are frozen. Not sure yet if plants are dead.

8° F not sure yet what to think about garlic leaves look very wilted.

It has been 20 years since we had below freezing weather for more than a weeks that did not warm up above freezing during the day.

Wife wants to cook stew for dinner we need to buy carrots. 4000 carrots in garden and none we can dig up.

It is rare for our soil to freeze 1" deep, today I think soil is frozen 2" deep. New learning experience for sure. 30 yrs ago carrots froze in the soil for a month tips rotted off but carrots deep down were good.

Totally agree! Soils built up with organic matter produce plants which can endure much lower temps than otherwise.

Love that broccoli you pictured!

We enjoyed a rare East Texas snowstorm last night...several inches. These happen here in my experience about once every ten years and when they do it is quite the event.

Garden cover crop is buried in snow, but I expect it to fully survive. Plants such as broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, carrots, etc. all appear to be doing fine.

Onions are almost buried in snow, but again I'm not expecting any damage from the 15 deg. F predicted for tonight.

2 degrees here last night with about 4 or 5 inches of snow on the ground. What few turnips survived the deer are frozen hard as steel.
I definitely am worried about my cover crop as it's been pretty much under snow along with brutal cold since after Christmas.
Plus, a herd of 30 deer or more have stayed in it digging thru the snow. I've never seen so much deer droppings in all my life. My uncle says last time he saw it this bad here was winter of 77/78.
I need to get my cabbage and broccoli started but it's hard to get going in this weather.

4° here this morning. We left water running in kitchen and both bathrooms all night. 4 am wife could not sleep she kept thinking, what if pipes freeze. She got our of bed and water flow was, drip, drip, drip, almost frozen. She turned water on higher it took a few minutes and water was flowing again. TV Weather said. FL & AL beach have 7" of snow, they said it has never snowed there. Todays high is predicted to be 31° and warmer tomorrow. We have a week of 40° & 50° high for 5 days in a row predicted maybe I can pull up some carrots Sat or Sun to see what type freeze damage there is. TN people Freak Out in weather like this all schools are closed, lots of work places people afraid to drive to work. I'm not afraid to drive, I'm afraid of people that might destroy my vehicle.
