I've been trawling through my recordings and I remembered playing this.

This is a cut and paste from a message I've just posted on an America based leccy piano message board (I included the lyrics as most over there would not know the song).

This song was written by the Jamaican singer Errol Brown. (1943-2015). It made number 5 in the hit parade, here in the UK. In 1982.
I've always liked lyrics that tell a story and I play it from time to time.

These are they.

It started with a kiss
In the back row of the classroom
How could I resist
The aroma of your perfume
You and I were inseparable
It was love at first sight
You made me promise to marry you
I made you promise to be my wife
But you were only eight years old
And I had just about turned nine
I thought that life was always good
I thought you always would be mine

It started with a kiss
Never thought it would come to this
It started with a kiss
I never thought it would come to this

I remember every little thing
Like fighting in the playground
'Cause some good looking boy
Had started to hang around
That boy hurt me so bad
But I was happy 'cause you cried
Still I couldn't help but notice
That new distant look in your eyes

And then when you were sixteen
And I had just turned seventeen
I couldn't hold on to your love
I couldn't hold on to my dream
It started with a kiss
I never thought it would come to this

It started with a kiss
Never thought it would come to this
You don't remember me, do you?
You don't remember me, do you?

Walking down the street
Came the star of my love story
And my heart began to beat so fast
So clear was my memory
I heard my voice cry out your name
And as she looked and looked away
I felt so hurt, I felt so small
It was all that I could say
You don't remember me, do you?
You don't remember me, do you?
You don't remember me, do you?
You don't remember me, do you?

It started with a kiss
Never thought it would come to this
It started with a kiss, oh
Never thought it would come to this

In an interview, he was asked about the song and told the Mail On Sunday, January 25, 2009: "I thought of the title and connected it to my puppy love for a girl in my class in Jamaica when I was nine. Her name was Barbara Blackwood. She would have no idea it had anything to do with her."

He was right, the Mail tracked her down and like in the song, she didn't remember him.

Shame.

Anyway, here's my version.

I bought the CD from which this comes, well over a decade ago.

The song was written by Tommy Wolf (1925-1979) and Fran Landesman 1927-2011), in 1952.
It sounds as if it belongs in a 30s musical.

I actually uploaded it to YouTube myself at the time, but it got taken down.
Several years later, it had this "Official" upload and later, a couple of others.

Jane Monheit is a relatively little known jazz singer from New York.
Other better known singers have recorded it, but I still find her's, the best.
It's a song with a story, I like those.

This is an interesting read about the writers.

Watching or should I say listening to Ayozat TV (186)on sky, Blast from the past and Memory Lane with Phil Mack.
Music from 50,60s.
Great mixture of rock and roll, rhythm and blues, skiffle . Allsorts from American and British charts.
