What can I do to help my apple tree?

You can prune away all of those shoots at the base. You can expose the root flare if it isn't. You can remove all of the grass at the base and apply a thick layer of mulch. You can fertilize and water the tree. You can scratch the bark of the limb with all of the dead leaves. If it shows a greenish color leave it alone but if not it is dead and should be removed.
