Hi all. I’ve just bought a couple of their deep planters, basically big grow bags, for decanting into pots and growing toms in the greenhouse. I understand it’s not organic but on opening the first bag there is a really strong chemical smell which is worrying me. AI suggests it is safe but who knows who’s controlling that ? So, I thought I’d throw it out there to you experienced folk for opinions. Many thanks in anticipation.

I suspect they put something in there to kill off the baddies, but I find the thrips always survive. Short of making your own compost (which would be great) and/or getting the likes of horse manure (again great if you can get it from a known safe source), you are stuck with it. Leave it open for a few days to air before planting up.

I have had compost I left in a closed bag turn to stinking sludge, could be to stop that happening.
