My wife has tried before getting starts off Rose's from cuttings but they never rooted.

Recently I have been getting cuttings and I trim most all off them and just put them in water and doing well with other plants.

I'm thinking this should be the same with Rose's. If it does just get cuttings and don't tell her. If it works she will be surprised.

I have had success making an angled cut in the ground with a spade and heeling in. Beware, some roses have poor root systems and only do well when grafted onto a root stock, check if you can see a graft on the original. As a boy I remember Romany people asking my uncle for permission to go through his hedgerows for wild roses to dig and sell to breeders, I don't think that happens anymore, the rootstocks are commercially grown.
