What is the best way to stake tall and floppy annuals?

That last one is pretty messy looking. I like that the middle one is using hemp or jute string, that means it can go straight in the compost at the end of the season, I wouldn't be so sure about the netting. Doing it early on is good in that the plant grows and hides it, but it is also good to do it before the roots have developed so you are not pushing a stake through them. It probably won't hurt, but any wound is a potential entry point for disease. I use bamboo myself, there are much thinner, lighter ones available than those he had, and they are pretty strong. Split bamboo often comes coloured green too and is good for the shorter uses, it doesn't often come over 2ft or 18 inches.
