We have a ratty old fence in the backyard that will need replacing in a few years max. My wife likes having visible greenery through our back windows.
We discussed Ivy or Clematis (currently have one training on the back fence) but I think we'd like to go with a bush instead (okay if it takes several years to get to full height).
The challenge is (as can be seen in the photo) the section of our deck to the fence is only about 5' wide where the grass is showing. Adding something like a boxwood could be a bit tricky as we'd like to keep any "hedge" down to only maybe 1-1.5' wide so as to not crowd out this walkway.
Can this be done with something like a Boxwood (Variegata) or are these too large and spread too wide to support the bush being trimmed so slim?
Any other recommendations for evergreens that will still look pretty in the winter but can be trimmed super narrow so as to avoid losing the entire distance between deck edge and fence?
Thanks in advance!
Mike
