Being a Aussie Born / bred I’m quite familiar with what I’ve always called Quandongs

Do they grow in other countries ? In dry areas

They are a sucker so they need a host of tree to grow ….they are what you’d find in someone’s back yard they grow in very arid dry roadside areas in dry climates

When I was a kid we’d trade Quandong stones at school we used to invent games that involved using the stones that are as hard as a marble

Our indigionus people used them for medicines / food

Very interesting post @Peaches ...most enjoyable.

I had to do some research on Quandongs/Native Peach in America and found:

1) there is no native peach in the USA, none. It originates in China

2) some indigenous tribes in the four corners region display archaeological evidence of peach trees that appear to be remnants of Spanish explorers.

3) it would be possible to grow the Quandongs here but require special protection from the "polar vortex" events we have in winter.

Very interesting plant.

It’s as hard as Nails …@meadowlark ….and a long held fact when I was young was ,it wouldn’t grow ( new plants ) unless a bushfire went through the area and burned the stones ….but of course with research they're found ways to grow it

however I think I said it’s a kinda leach ….it needs a host to grow

Keep these key details in mind when planting:

They naturally latch onto nitrogen-fixing plants like Acacias (wattles), Casuarinas (sheoaks), or native grasses and legumes.

There is a indigionus arid plants botanic garden in a town called Port Augusta some 3 hours drive from us ,

PA is sorta on the edge of a desert ….its very dry / arid even tho it’s in part of a gulf called the Spencer gulf

They’ve done extensive research on Quandongs , and make a sells jams / chutneys /pies / biscuits as well, as selling dried Quandongs / the fruit is very tart tasting very thin skin

I’ve got a photo of a tree where we picked a small bucket of them from during summer
( near our home ) but it’s to big for posting ,so I’ll have to edit it

That burning sounds like seed stratification which many seeds I use require. Cold stratification often used and sometimes scarification...just have to break that outer protection layer on seeds.
