Hello fellow gardeners,

I want to grow a Meyer lemon and a Dancy tangerine at my home. I live in a community w/ an HOA and we are required to have all plants in pots as to not interfere with plumbing lines. I have been reading a lot on growing citrus in pots. All sources say to plant them in at least a 2' x 2' pot. I would like to do so so I do not have to replant any time soon. I can not for the life of me find any 2' x 2' planters locally (i.e. Oceanside CA which is coastal northern most San Diego County.

Does anyone here have any sources for 2' x 2' pots in this area?

Potential plan B's:

Local farm supplies have "nursery pots" that are 18' x 24". These are thin black plastic pots that are not attractive, but close to size. If I used these I would double them up because they are not very durable.

Hardware and big box home stores have half wooden whisky barrels. The biggest I can find are 26" wide by 17.5" tall. The width is good, but the depth is a full 6.5" too short. Do you think the added width would make up for the more shallow depth? I am concerned that limiting depth will limit the height of the citrus threes.

Thoughts?
Thanks in advance!
JD

I just googled 2 foot by 2 foot plant containers and there are a bunch of them. And will deliver to your door. Wallmart has 3 round galvanized containers for $70. You can always paint them.

Thanks @Chuck ,

I just looked at Walmart. I didn't see what you were talking about. I did see a a bunch of raised bed containers. Many of the 2x2 are two side by 2 long, but shorter that 2', e.g. 17". Some that are taller, e.g. 18", pr 21" are measured from the floor / ground up but the usable interior height is more like 16 or 17".

Respectfully,
JD

I just noticed that they are open ended. A simple matter to make something to sit them on to stop roots from going into the ground.

Thanks again @Chuck ,

The truth is I am not that handy. Plus, I will need to move this container / tree from time to time, e.g., for upcoming painting. Having a one piece planter that includes an attached bottom will m make that much easier.

Best regards!

I’ve just bought this raised garden bed direct from the manufacturer and I was going to mention the round one like the link you posted @Chuck

I live in Australia , but I was sure they would also be made in other countries

Those wine barrels deteriorate / fall apart / rot within a year @jjdbike ..well they do in Australia ….and it’s a nightmare trying to repot from a wine barrel after a tree has established itself ….many simply loose the trees they’ve put so work into

So I give a couple of thumbs up to @Chuck

The other shape I have ( we’ve got terrible hard rock insted of soil ) 😥😥 limestone

so this Aussie is to old to be digging in limestone in our very limited area to grow a few veggies

Its winter here so what’s left in the garden is looking a bit sad 😔

Thanks everyone.

I am not allowed to have raised beds. All of my plants are required to be in pots.. I need to have the ability to move them if needed. That requires a fixed bottom.

Respectfully,
JD

Welcome @jjdbike. It is shocking to me to read those restrictions in what is normally termed a "free" country. What is the justification for them on gardening?

Hmm,not sure what the HOA is gonna think about cattle watering troughs in your front yard.LOL. Most citrus trees (less than 10 years old) would be very happy in a half whiskey barrel. My Page and Owari satsumas are in 20 x 20 inch plywood planters I built myself and are very happy.
