I am planning on building a Plant identification add on for the forum, where you could actually take a pic of the plant, it will id it, and also give you help on what could be wrong with it(yellowing leaves, etc). Would this be something you would use here?

Plant id tools are widely available and many are free. Incorporating those into GF would probably make it easier on some members.

However, I enjoy the human interactions. That's what makes GF great.

We are blessed to have several experts here...experts that I trust over the plant id tools. It would be a shame if adding those tools detracted in any manner from the discussions and insights uniquely provided by our cadre of experts.

More times than I can count, I have seen the tools make mistakes. I have also experienced on several occasions the same tool giving a different id on the same photo.

So, it is a mixed response for me. The convenience would be nice but if it in any way detracted from the human interactions, that would not be a good thing in my view.

I'm reworking the ideas of it being tied to threads and posts, where there could be alot of chatter from each plant/issue ID upload.

Personally I would AI, but know there are many on here that either won't, can't or don't want to and would much more trust this site and any such tool. But I'd also be concerned if it was a lot of effort on your part to add it and no one to use it. Hopefully more will reply , even if simply "yes" or "no thanks" .

That has good potential.

I'm not keen on the idea particularly if it's AI based. I've seen too many mistakes by AI and will not use it.

It will also detract from the interaction between our friends here and also the knowledge we gain through that and identification. If necessary we have the internet to seek out certain plants and discover others through that process.
