(I've made a new post to follow this up as l searched and found original thread but couldn't work how to add).
By jove I think I've done it! .
I heard back from my local man I purchased this plant from and he said I could plant it in the garden on a mound with sand mixed in. I mixed 1 part sand to 2 part potting mix and a handful of the garden soil and also of the soil from the pot it was in. I also decided to put this guard over it. It is a fairly floppy plant and needs a stake so it will support it but also to remind me that it is there when it does back to nothing. Not sure how this will work as it grows to its full height.
