Patchy/weedy grass help

Hi, my lawn has ended up a mess from last autumn. I am now trying to work out how to remedy it now we are in spring. I would appreciate any suggestions on the best way to remove the problem and get some nice grass back in my garden. Thanks.

I would start with a soil sample? Even a home test kit just for PH to see if its way off. I used the home test kit just to see any change in my lime applications.
Thats what my lawn looked like not long ago. After soil test it showed my PH was low 5.2 along with most nutrients so I was not applying lime or fert at the correct rate.

So I would start with a heavy aeration
Then a Pre Emergent weed control
Then maybe a a dose of Starter fertilizer
While waiting for the soil sample.

Make sure your lawn is getting enough water to help it recover
I would wait till fall to plant new seeds.
Once you get your soil sample back you can work on a plan.
You can spot spray for weeds as they show up
For soil test I used UMASS extension program I here WayPoint mail in testing is good also.
