Sailor who doubled in size on navy diet wins disability benefits

Wonderful Article. Explains obesity under controlled conditions.

But Buckley said he doesn’t believe the issue is unique to navy service.

“I don’t think the food aboard the ships is any different than the food in the average kitchen in Nova Scotia,” Buckley told The Chronicle Herald. “It’s the same processed rubbish that most everyone is eating.
“The only thing unique about him is that he was on a different diet altogether before he went into the military.”

According to former navy officer Ken Hansen, obesity in the navy is not a new problem, nor is this case an isolated one.

“Eating is a really big deal in a life that is predominately boredom and punctuated with moments of extreme excitement. Food becomes enormously important for morale.”

I gain weight when I am bored. I will find myself looking for things to eat before I finish eating the thing I have in my hands. I will make cookies, muffins or cook up more than one meal just to give myself something to do. I can imagine being locked in a small ship underwater would cause people to be bored and and look something to help relieve the boredom like eating.

Maybe more exercise should be part of the program and less food.

Exercise definitely needs to be the main focus. I gain a ton of weight when I am bored and looking for something to do as well. I cannot keep my hands off of food. Luckily, I have recently made changes in my life that have resulted in weightloss. That man was probably incredibly bored with little to nothing to do.

I'm much the same that when I am bored I'll snack. It's easy to do because food is something that takes time to prepare and to eat - but I've had to try and train myself not to treat food like a hobby! It's tricky, that's for sure.

I guess I am just weird. No matter how much or what I cram down my gullet I just don't gain weight. I have been the same for the past 40+ years. I guess it is because I am always doing something, useless or not

I'm the same way. Even when I had a sedentary job (drove a truck over the road for three years in the late 1980s) my weight stayed the same. I ate less during that time because I didn't need the extra calories.

I'm skinny, and actually wish I was a bit larger! But at almost 58, I weigh the same as I did at 15.

Its a combination of eating too much crappy food, frequent snacking and drinking soda, and lack of exercise. Most people I know are at least somewhat overweight. My best friend had that gastric tube surgery last December and has lost over 100 lbs. I'm very proud of her. And she'd be the first to tell you that she was flat-out addicted to eating so it hasn't been easy for her.

I don't think there is a place on earth that is worse than the cafeteria in schools. Nothing but processed foods!

I am glad the sailor win and that to me is just fantastic. It could be a start for something better and new as far as foods go on the ship!

The problem is in understanding and unawareness. People need to be educated in this area regardless of school. Kids should know what to eat and how to eat in order to stay fit. Countries like Kuwait, USA, Malta even Greece have nig problems with obesity because people are unaware and lack motivation to make things better. I have a nephew who is three years old and i am imprinting some workouts in him while we play. We do sit ups, push ups and crunches. He loves it because hold hands and just have fun. He will make a habit on this and with proper nutrition he will have no obesity problem unless he gets sick or something like that. So we need to educate the little ones but first we have to take care of ourselves.

I finally stopped growing when I was 27, it just stopped. I was tall and skinny as a rail all during high school, went into the military and stopped growing in height at 22. Then started getting heavier until 27 and have been the same since. 6'3" and 218 lbs of walking talking heaven;)

I'm 5'4 and the most I have ever weighed is 110, but that lasted about a month if that. And that was 4 years ago. I'm lucky to stay at 100 nowadays. Way too skinny.

I think this topic has to do with many, many factors. Not only what is being eaten, but definitely the exercise. When you exercise less, or just start being less active, your muscles weaken from lack of use, making it harder to use them, and honestly less likely that you will. It's a vicious cycle. Unfortunately, it's hard to jump back on it after you've slacked off with it, and it's become a huge problem. That has a huge impact.

If one does not exercise then they risk adding weight. Sugary foods also contribute to adding weight, not only fatty foods. There are disadvantages related to being obese like high blood pressure and diabetes. We must act immediately if we realise that we have started adding extra weight.
