No Luck with Lucky Bamboo

I love having lucky bamboo around the house, but I have so far been unlucky with nurturing them that they turn yellow two weeks after my purchase. I only use distilled water, and put in some brown pebbles sold by the store I bought them from. What am I doing wrong? Is there some hydrophonics technique in the care of Lucky Bamboo? Am I supposed to feed it with chemicals?
