I bought tons of bromeliads and videos like this really help. The old flower stem should be chopped off and plant in indirect sunlight.

The cactus needs more sand / grit than bark mulch. Don't water the houseplants until they are dry to the touch. Bromeliad loves indirect sunlight and you water into the urn, not the soil. Keep it in the bathroom and it will be very happy as the daily moisture from your showers will be a happy condition for its growth. They are tough cookies and mine had been destined to the trash bin in the shop. They now have sideshoots and I was completely new to them.

I'd cut the top off and try to get it to root in gritty compost.

I agree. Trim off anything that's rotten and let them dry out. I water my succulents every 2-4 weeks, if that, and they grow and sprout off shoots like crazy. I also like this liquid succulent food some companies make. I think it may have helped the plants to multiply.
