Hi,

I need help to ID if this is a Japanese maple or Shiny Xylosma? It has no leaf and I couldn’t tell. The dead leaf on the branch is not really from this tree and also different from the dead leaf at the container soil...

thanks in advance

It's definitely NOT a Xylosma. It doesn't look like a Japanese Maple either. It does look like a maple of some sort, a close-up of the leaf buds would help clarify the ID.

Hi,

Thanks for the quick reply.
The bud is quite small right now without the leaves. It seemed it is some red edge green leaf possibly with red bark. Could it be Sango Kaku?

Thanks again.

Yeah, with the close-up it does look like A. palmatum, which variety is harder to guess. The bark doesn't look quite right for Sango Kaku, it should be much more vibrant. From what I've seen it looks like it's a common green seedling, still a really nice tree. This one looks more upright and vigorous than most, so enjoy your special little shade tree.
