Hi All,

In the photos below is a plant that grows in the neighbor's yard. I can't find on line or a phone plant identification app what it is and am asking if any of you recognize it.

Clues-
It is about 10 feet tall

Yesterday, it could not be seen above the six-foot tall fence. Today it was about 5 feet above the fence and many branches were on my side of the fence.

There are many branches of similar diameter coming from a single point. They reach in many directions.

The leaves are about 4 to 5 inches long.

It has an odor of gasoline mixed with fresh dog poop. (Which remains on the hands, as I discovered by not being bright enough to use gloves when I cut it back to the fence.)
The odor remains on one's hands despite many washings until the stainless steel odor remover trick is done.

Do you all have any ideas of what it could be? I want to ensure I keep cutting it back if it is poisonous to dogs. (Along with the 3 other dog poisons that grow over the fence.)

Thanks For Helping!
Paul

Does it get flower do you know? Leaves and wood look like our Weigela
Thanks for taking time to answer, Diggersjo. I appreciate your help.
It wasn't here (or at least wasn't above the fence where I could see it) last year, so I don't know yet if it flowers. I didn't notice any buds, but I was hacking away rather quickly to get away from the odor.

Weigela would be nice! Flowers and not poison to my dog.

The "stink that won't go away" and the "grew 5 feet overnight" are dead giveaways that you have Tree of Heaven (or hell if you want to get rid of it), Ailanthus altissima. It will sprout from every single piece of root left in the ground if you try to dig it up. Be prepared to trim it back every week for the rest of the Summer and again every year from now on. It is mildly toxic to dogs, but they won't eat more than 1 bite; it's THAT nasty. Think of the smell as the taste and would you eat more than a tiny taste.

But it has toothed margins. I don't think tree of heaven does

Im with CPP Gardner on the tree of heaven.

When you cut a limb apply glyphosphate to the fresh cut limb with a paint brush. Dont dilute it.

You wont get rid of it completely but you can slow it down a lot. It will pop up in other places.

Its an invasive weed/plant that does a lot of ecological damage. Your neighbors probably wont notice. Or talk to them first if you get along.

Im fighting it in my yard too.

Thanks for pointing out the margins, Martin. I take back my identification. I think some kind of Juglandaceae.
I thought tree of heaven at first too. The bark got me, but i think it's just shredded from pruning

Walnuts and butternuts do have a scent but i find it pleasant like incense or soap but maybe its offputting to some people, like broccoli
