I heard that it did not grow well in Mobile as it likes a drier climate. Is there any use trying to grow it in MO? I know it is hardly dry here, but maybe there is some sort of trick to it?

This plant is a salvia. I would worry more about your soil type than a wetter than ideal climate. It prefers alkaline soils. Plant in a raised bed with excellent drainage and if soil is acidic ammend with appropriate materials such as lime.
