In my experience it doesn't matter, they spread quickly(in all directions) through their rhizomes; eventually they will be grouped very tightly. I collect my neighbors' yard waste and one neighbor threw out their uprooted canna plants, I threw them on the ground as mulch, but they actually started growing -- so now I have two different varieties of canna lily.
