If you remove side shoots at about four or five inches and stand them in water they will start growing roots. These are 'water roots', and I tend to plant the cuttings in a small pot as soon as they appear, then I stand the pot in a larger container and fill that to the rim of the pot, so they are in earth but effectively still in water. They take pretty soon and you have your next generation of tomatoes to pot on in the normal way.
